With eight seasons and over 150 episodes, The Vampire Diaries dominated pop culture and The CW for many years. His legions of fans mobilized to help him win 30 Teen Choice Awards over the years, and his cultural impact is still debated today. “10 years ago every girl was either eating gossips, pretty little liars, or the vampire diaries,” said one hit tweet. Someone answered“I was so OBSESSED with the vampire diaries that I convinced all 7 of my friends to check them out and comment on them too.”
Spending almost a decade together on screen, it’s no surprise that many of the show’s main characters developed off-screen relationships — which gave fans plenty to comment on. Ian Somerhalder dated series star Nina Dobrev for three years. He eventually switched to another vampire actress – Nikki Reed from “Twilight” – and the couple married. Though Dobrev told Andy Cohen there was no bad blood, some blame the broken relationship for the lack of a Vampire Diaries reboot.
While one would expect workplace romances to be the biggest source of on-set drama, Somerhalder actually had more conflicts with another leading lady.
Kat Graham and Ian Somerhalder didn’t get along
In The Vampire Diaries, Kat Graham played Bonnie Bennett – a witch who features prominently in the series. Despite being in the OG cast from season one, she revealed to Aol that they didn’t all get along initially.
“Ian and I didn’t like each other at all before,” she spilled. “We hated each other in the first season… We wanted to kill each other.” Looking back on the feud, she simply attributed most of the problems to being young and having equally strong personalities. “Now he’s my best friend in the cast … He helped me find myself and is now one of my biggest inspirations.”
Her beef on set with Somerhalder didn’t seem to affect her performance as the show’s co-creator has praised her talent and even asked her to reprise her character. “The door will always be open to Bonnie,” Julie Plec told Deadline. Unfortunately, Graham made it pretty clear to TMZ in 2021 that she and the cast had moved on. After all, her former rival Somerhalder now has a child and a wife … on which Graham has some opinions as well.
Kat Graham and Nikki Reed are close friends
What does it mean – “My enemy’s wife is my girlfriend?” No? Anyway, Kat Graham seems to have completely overcome her earlier feelings for Ian Somerhalder and is celebrating his relationship with Nikki Reed. “Nikki is amazing and we’re very, very close,” Graham told People. In 2014, E! News caught up with the girls at the Diamond Ball. Reed even went so far as to joke that she would call off her upcoming wedding to Somerhalder to be with Graham instead.
If Graham takes Reed and Somerhalder’s relationship seriously, however, he only has positive things to say about it. Graham explained to People that they are “a perfect match.” She said, “You have the same values when it comes to people, how you treat people, how you treat animals, how you treat the world and the environment.” Thinking Somerhalder is worthy of her BFF is the only proof We need this beef squashed.
