Inside Ivana Trump’s relationship with Melania Trump

Ivana Trump, designer and ex-wife of former President Donald Trump, has died at the age of 73, according to her family. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ivana Trump,” her family said (via ABC7). “Our mom was an incredible woman — a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty, and a caring mother and friend.” The outlet goes on to report that officials believe Ivana died of natural causes, as she initially died on a Call for a person in cardiac arrest responded.

Donald later confirmed the news himself, calling the former model an “amazing woman.” “I am very saddened to announce to everyone who loved her, of whom there are many, that Ivana Trump passed away at her home in New York City,” the former reality star wrote on Truth Social. “She was a wonderful, beautiful and amazing woman who lived an amazing and inspiring life.” And while it’s clear that Ivana had a loving bond with her family, the truth about her relationship with former First Lady Melania Trump may come as a surprise to some be.

Ivana and Melania Trump apparently had a complicated relationship

Ivana Trump was married to Donald Trump for 14 years and divorced in 1991. During their time together, the couple had three children: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. And while Ivana’s association with the former president ended well before her death, some may be wondering about the former businesswoman’s relationship with Melania Trump.

While Ivana never specifically said if she liked Melania (or not), the “Raising Trump” writer has publicly voiced her opinions on the former FLOTUS. When asked in 2020 if she thought Melania would land a first job during her run as first lady, Ivana coyly replied. “I’m not sure. She is very quiet and really doesn’t go to too many places. She goes into things when she has to go,” Ivana told Loose Women, adding that “she’s quiet.” Ivana was also asked if she had a personal relationship with Melania, to which she replied, “No, she I speak directly to Mr. President and don’t get involved with his ex-wives and personal life.” However, Ivana confirmed that the two had met at some point.

Ivana Trump once said she felt sorry for Melania

Though it seems Ivana Trump and Melania Trump don’t have a close bond, amid Donald Trump’s scandal with Stormy Daniels, the author seemed sympathetic to the former first lady. “I feel bad for it [Melania] because I know how bad I felt. It hurts a lot,” said Ivana Page Six. “I immediately divorced Donald [after I discovered the Marla Maples affair] because I said to myself, ‘Am I going to live with the person? [who] will say, “I’ll go and play golf” [leaving me to] Think, ‘Is he really going to go golf?’ I can’t do it.”

Ivana detailed her ex-husband’s alleged affair with Marla Maples in her 2017 book, Raising Trump. Ivana claimed the “Two of Hearts” star brought the affair to her attention in 1989, which led to her split from the business mogul in 1992. “This young blonde woman came up to me out of the blue and said, ‘I’m Marla and I love your husband. Do you?'” Ivana wrote in the book (via AP). “I said, ‘Go away. I love my husband.’ It was unladylike, but I was shocked.” Maples eventually became Donald’s second wife.

Ivana Trump once believed she was the First Lady

Ivana Trump and Donald’s now-wife Melania Trump have had a rather unusual relationship over the years. While neither of them mentioned an apparent feud, at one point Ivana hinted that she didn’t care too much about what the former president and his wife had in store for them at the White House. “I think it must be awful that she’s in Washington,” Ivana said in a 2017 interview with ABC News. “She’s better than me. I would hate Washington.”

Though Ivana insisted she wouldn’t have liked living in the White House, she believed she was actually the first lady — not Melania. “Melania is here and I don’t want to stir up jealousy or anything because I’m Trump’s first wife,” she told Good Morning American in 2017 (via the Daily Mail). “I’m the first lady, okay?”

While Ivana probably just shared her heart, her words didn’t quite fit Melania. The former first lady fired back, releasing a statement aimed at her husband’s ex-wife. “Clearly there is no substance to this statement from an ex. Sadly just attention seeking and self-serving noise,” Melania wrote (via Daily Mail). Her spokesperson also noted that Ms. Trump enjoys living in Washington and is focused on helping the community around her. “She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books.”
